An old Maori man, possibly Kawiti, seated, with his grandson Parata (identified by historian Ormond Wilson, May 1984); compare Merrett's account of journey to Whangaroa, Feb. 1846, in Simmond's colonial magazine, 1846, v.3, p429-437.
Attribution on stylistic grounds.
The identification of the old man as Kawiti is doubtful. Kawiti, as painted by Merrett in the same year, 1846, (see C-012-019) is shown as clean-shaven and with extensive facial moko. The elderly man shown here is bearded, and has no moko.
Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997.
