Description

William Williams and Lydia Myrtle Williams in their vegetable garden, Carlyle Street, Napier, circa 1887. A fig tree is in the centre middle ground. Taken by William Williams.

"Lydia and William were married in Wellington on 1 August 1887. They settled in Napier where William worked for the Railways. Theirs is a typical weatherboard cottage with a shingle roof. In the following year the house was re-roofed with corrugated iron. The garden was clearly an enthusiasm and plantings of peas, gooseberries, liles and sunflowers can be seen in later photographs. Lydia and William moved to Dunedin in 1891. (Information taken from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display).

Exhibited in 'Darling, I'm Home!' exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, 1 June - 5 July 1999.
