Description

Photographs of the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands, and New Zealand, taken and collected on cruises undertaken by HMS Espiegle while serving with the Australian Squadron, 1882-1885. Includes photographs of the flag-raising ceremonies which took place in November 1884 in New Guinea, on the proclamation of the Protectorate. Many of the photographs were taken by members of the crew of the Espiegle, who had received instruction in the use of photographic equipment by John Paine of Sydney.
