- Description
The diary begins with a brief account of a visit to Waiheke and on to Thames and Coromandel, where he negotiated about goldfields land with the local Maori leaders. Most of the diary records a visit to the Bay of Islands and Hokianga in December 1869 and January 1870. Included are accounts of his conversations and impressions of the old chief Tamati Waka Nene, meetings with Hone Mohi Tawhai of Waima, and Te Tai Papahia. He stayed several days with Judge Frederick Maning. Included are notes on the attitudes of the various chiefs, northern Maori history, and on Europeans and Maori suitable for appointment to various positions.
