Description

The collection consists of personal papers of Pastor Ries and the Allardice family (Mrs Allardice is the daughter of Ries); printed material relating to the Dannevirke area ca 1936-1967; marriage certificates for the period 1920-1924 for the Danish Lutheran Church; and official records of the Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel Convention for the period 1877-1937. The last category comprises the bulk of the collection and includes accounts, testimonials, annual reports, lists of Church members, inward and outward letters etc. Most items are in Danish

Hans Madsen Ries was born in Denmark in 1860. He arrived in NZ in 1886, having decided to take up missionary work. Shortly after his arrival he was ordained and given charge of Norsewood and Dannevirke. In 1887 he married Kirsten Lauridsen, also a Dane. Pastor Ries became a prominent local businessman and took a leading part in public affairs in the Hawkes Bay region. He continued his involvement in the Lutheran Church in the area until his death in 1926, and held the office of President of the Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel Convention of NZ for a number of years.
