Looking south along a sandy beach with cliffs in the distance, north of Wanganui. A group of soldiers is swimming in the sea in the distance, with several others standing on the beach. In the foreground, a team of bullocks is hauling a dray with firewood, led by several men up a track towards the military camp, visible on the hilltop on the left. In the foreground is Mowhanau Stream, near Kai Iwi
