Original caption reads: "Waipiro Bay, Open Bay, looking south. The first glimpse from the Tawhiti Hills when approaching from Te Puia. Rivulet in centre is probably the hot stream from Te Puia, from the sulphur smell of the name Waipiro (strong smelling waters) is taken". Shows a women seated on the hill in the foreground. Photograph taken in December 1950 by W Walker for the National Publicity Studios.
