Description

A meeting in a pa with Maori and European men and women. A Maori man in the foreground is addressing the large group of attendees

The meeting took place at Pawhakairo. The Government had given the village a flour mill and the meeting was a response to the gift. The accompanying article in the Illustrated London news (Oct 31 1863, p. 446) identifies the bare-headed man in a dark suit, standing right of centre, as Donald McLean. The chief in the white hat, seated in a wheelbarrow, was unable to walk and came to the meeting in the barrow. The image is probably based on a photograph, or derived from several photographs. The three calabashes in the foreground and a different arrangement of people appear in a photograph of this meeting in Photographic Archive, in the Rhodes Album, PA1-q-193 page 13.
