Description

The carved prow of a war canoe with a tufted face and feet, feathers along the 'spine', and a double set of curved patterns.

The work has a monogram, lower left, possibly HMK or HWK. The artist's identity is not known for certain but could be Henry William Kirkwood

Possibly derived from the prow depicted in Sydney Parkinson's drawing 'New Zealand war canoe [April 1770]' in the British Library and its related engraving 'A war canoe of New Zealand with a view of Gable End Foreland' engraved by J J Barralet, 1772.
