The extracts cover the period from 26 Feb to 12 April 1858. Skellons left Melbourne for Nelson and later went to the Wairau. He was particularly interested in landscape and botany and mentions many people he met as he travelled. A tomato sauce recipe is included.

According to a supplied introduction to the transcript, William Skellons was a gardener who left England in 1854 and came to New Zealand in 1858 after spending some years in Australia. His diary was in the possession of Mr W R Allen, editor of the `Marlborough Express' (Blenheim) in 1953 and mainly concerns his Australian sojourn. Skellons lived in Blenheim and was the gardener at the Catholic Presbytery and the trees he planted were still there in 1953. The transcription is of the New Zealand section.
