View from about half-way up The Terrace, looking north along the beach line (now Lambton Quay). The Terrace is shown to the left and the view includes details of the houses along the north end of Lambton Quay and Thorndon, including a clear view of Molesworth Street and its houses. The flagpole in the front garden of Government House can be seen (now the front lawn of Parliament Buildings). Two jetties are shown close to the end of Molesworth Street, with another past Barrett's Hotel building (just north of Molesworth Street), part way along to Pipitea Point. St Paul's Church can be seen (without a steeple) in Mulgrave Street.
It has been suggested that this view may predate 1864, since it does not show Queen's Wharf, built 1862-1863. However the view is taken from a point further north than Queen's Wharf, (which would not therefore show in the drawing) and the state of the buildings supports the date inscribed by the artist.
