Description

A thatched shelter in a clearing in Nomuka, Tonga. Inside the shelter, a seated woman is playing a nose flute, with a man seated on her left, a folded cloth on the ground beyond him. In front of the shelter a standing man is facing the group. To the left, a taro plant is growing, with a banana palm to the left of the shelter and a coconut palm behind it, as well as other larger trees. A small family group is in the middle distance on the right.

A print probably intended by Webber for inclusion in his Views of the South Seas (London, 1809), but not finally included. The print is a rare one, (Joppien Smith no. 3.44A) although there are known hand-coloured copies in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu, the National Library of Australia, Canberra and the the British Museum, London, the latter with publication date Feb 1 1788. A coloured etching without aquatint of the same scene is also in the British Museum and the Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven has a squared-up pencil drawing for the print (Joppien Smith no 3.44)
