Artist unknown :[Military camp, Waikato or Taranaki. 1860s?]
- Date
- 1860 - 1869
- Reference
- B-116-012
- Description
Shows a view over the confluence of two streams, to a camp of circular ("bell") tents in a hilly landscape. The foreground slope has four pitched striped tents, a mounted soldier pointing, and several infantrymen with guns. Two bridges cros the two arms of the stream.
Location could be Waikato or Taranaki, but the landforms have not been identified. Possible artist could be Henry Stratton Bates.
The vendor notes: "The tents in the foreground are that of a piquet [ie sentinel]. The non-bell shaped tents could well have been for officers, NCO's or more than the two to three that would normally be in a bell tent".
Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
Physical Description: Watercolour, 285 x 378 mm.
Provenance: Vendor had bought it from a Dominion Road (Auckland) antique dealer.
