Description

A back view of a capering Sir Joseph Banks, looking at an empty wine cask which is embedded in the top of a giant sized mushroom. Banks' butler has climbed a ladder to reach the cask. Other historic labelled wine bottles are stacked around the room. Banks, the botanist, is delighted that the fungal growth has taken over his cellar.

The text below the caricature explains that Banks had arranged to have a cask of wine cellared to allow age to reduce its sweetness. When his butler tried to open the cellar door 3 years later, the cask was at ceiling height, lifted up by a giant fungus. Banks exclaims 'It is a most Glorious discovery cut it down & send it to the Museum had the Wine been Bottled, it wod not have been half so interesting'. Banks was President of the Royal Society at the time
