- Description
A photograph of Lovelock and others competing in an Oxford University Athletic Club (OUAC) v Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) mile race, at the OUAC Iffley Road track. The photograph was taken at the end of the first lap, which on the Iffley Road track was 600 yds. Unlike most running tracks the runners ran clockwise.
In his journal entry accompanying this photograph Lovelock wrote that beforehand he had taken a break from training and `had not turned out on the track at all but had watched eights and been on river parties. The complete rest had done my training the world of good and throughout the race I was feeling absolutely on top form as if running on air'. He tore through the first 440 yards in under a minute, and hung to win in 4 minutes 12 seconds, a new British record.
