Description

Mounted Soldiers of either the New Zealand Mounted Brigade, or the ANZAC Mounted Division, riding along the embankment of the Suez Canal, Egypt. Probably photographed by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Guy Powles in 1916.

The label on the original envelope from which this negative came was "Egypt. Training." This probably means that this photograph was taken in 1916 after the New Zealand Mounted Brigade had moved from Zeitoun to Serapeum on the Suez Canal in January 1916. Here training continued and the ANZAC Mounted Division was formed on the 15th of March 1916. On the 23rd of April 1916 the Division moved to Kantara as a Turkish force had attacked the Suez Canal. This was the beginning of the Middle Eastern Campaign.
