Description

A New Zealand Artillery officer bends over to read the wooden cross marking a grave in a former German field cemetery that is now a target of German shelling in World War I. Water-filled shell holes can be seen in the background. There is also a broken wooden cross on the ground. Photograph taken at Westhoek Ridge 4 February 1918 by Henry Armytage Sanders.
