Scene in a military camp, with soldiers making high circular wickerwork baskets in the foreground. A cavalryman in on horseback in the centre. Tents and low barracks are in the background.
Compare the right side of a similar sketch in the Hocken Library by E. A. Williams, Hamley's superior officer 'Siege train on Pukerimu Flats, Waikato, 1864. Soldiers making gabions'. The sketch is p. 15 of Williams' sketchbook, now disbound and separately mounted. Many of Hamley's sketches are copied from Williams
