St joseph's Roman Catholic Church opposite the Basin Reserve, Wellington. Photographed by Evening Post staff photographer John Nicholson on the 18th of October 1984.
The building used as a church was originally a dance hall which was converted in 1945. A new church or cathedral had been planned for this block of land since the turn of the century [ie 1900]. Two world wars, financial difficulties and roading designations being placed on the land had prevented the plans being realised (info from caption).
