- Description
Shows a missionary in straw hat, knee-length jacket, waistcoat and blue cravat, greeting a group of hostile armed Maori on a beach. His arms are outstretched in front and behind him, and he points forward and up with his left hand. Behind him a group of Europeans wait in a rowboat. There are tree ferns or palms and a snowy mountain range in the background. The mountain range is possibly intended to represent Mount Taranaki. The Maori are bare-chested with loincloths and cloaks, and many are carrying taiaha with metal spear tips. One wields an axe above his head.
The composition and the pose of the missionary have similarities to George Baxter's "The Revd. J. Waterhouse superintending the landing of the missionaries at Taranaki, New Zealand", 1844.
