Description

Ink and watercolour semi-abstract sketch of boats beside a quay, with white-washed houses in the background.

Handwritten text on the verso: "Martigues is epatant [amazing] for certain effects. Very many thanks for your card and for lending a helping hand - I hope Mr Howell did not get a shock & decide not to hang my "children". I am afraid I gave you a lot of trouble - can you forgive me? Barling is thinking of Martigues for Easter - shall you come too? It will be lovely & warm here by then. Shall I book you a room? Let me know in good time. Shall not be here alas! It is still too cold for outside work - a pest of a wind - Pinder's Circus could not put up their canvas last night so performed in the theatre next door - & spent the remainder of the night at this Hotel - after midnight all sorts of offstage noises & much merriment - it quite bucked us up - with the elephants or horses of course - "close ups" of circus ladies not so enchanting as you could wish for - I have got some choice sketches of them - Yours FH"

Barling is possibly Elsie J Barling 1883-1976
