Description

Shows Sir George Grey, seated, Te Rangihaeata with outstretched arm, groups of Maori, house on hill on right, middle distance

According to an account in the New Zealand Spectator and Cook's Strait Guardian of September 1851, this event took place on 13 September 1851, but was at Otaki, not Waikanae. The Library's title is taken from the matching lithograph in Oliver's folio of lithographs of New Zealand (and New Caledonia) Sketches in New Zealand (London, 1852). Oliver could have misrecorded the place name as a once-only visitor to the area; the account in the Spectator could also be mistaken

Other Titles - Otaki

Inscriptions: Verso - Eloquence is as much valued by these people as by more educated races. Upon this occassion the Governor in chief (Sir George Grey) was addressed by Te Rangihaeta [sic] who if not so eloquent was highly energetic. His forte lay more in the field than the council while Te Rauperaha [sic] was famous for his oratory. This scene took place at Waikeni [sic] near Cooks Strait 1851 G C S O 1929 [?] [i.e. text from R A Oliver's published caption to the lithograph version of this view, published in Sketches in New Zealand (London, 1852).
