Description

Collection comprises digital copies of a two-volume diary and sketch book compiled by Dora Foljambe of her tour of New Zealand with her husband Colonel George Foljambe and their daughter Avice, December 1919 - Jun 1920. Also includes an electronic copy of a partial transcript of these diaries. The diary entries are accompanied by line drawings and watercolours. Includes references to visiting George Foljambe's cousin Lord Liverpool, the Governor General of New Zealand, and his wife Annette. The diaries detail the Foljambe's social engagements and Dora Foljambe's observations of local flora and fauna. Also includes entries and sketches of Maori and rural activities like fishing, hunting and sheep-shearing.

Throughout the diary Dora Foljambe refers to the `Exs'. Presumedly this reference relates to Lord and Lady Liverpool.

Diary - Sketchbook one

Description: Electronic files comprise the first sketchbook of a two-volume diary kept by Dora Foljambe of her tour of New Zealand. The diary begins as a continuation of the voyage to New Zealand by the Foljambe family. The first illustrations and diary entries relate to their travels into the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu. Sketches depict local people, buildings and landscapes. The journey continues to Fiji then on to Auckland. From there the Foljambe family's travels and social events are documented around New Zealand and through to Wellington on the 3rd April 1920. There are many sketches of country villas and gardens, with entries relating to river fishing, sheep shearing and hunting activities at various locations. The insert depicts the statue of Captain Robert Scott as seen from the window of the Clarendon Hotel, Christchurch (Dec 1919). Arrangement: The original arrangement of the manuscript included one leaf inserted into the sketchbook. This insert includes a sketch of the statue of Captain Robert Scott. The verso page of the leaf has been annotated with details relating to the art work. The digital copies of these pages are the last two files on this record. The original sketchbook has been compiled in reverse. The inside cover of the manuscript would normally be the back inside cover. Quantity: 79 Electronic document(s). Description: Electronic files comprise the second sketch book of a two-volume diary kept by Dora Foljambe of her tour of New Zealand. The diary continues with the Foljambe family's travels around New Zealand. Setting out from Wellington they head north to Rotorua and Tarawera. The diary briefly details local Maori and their preparation for the Prince of Wales's visit in late April 1920 in Rotorua. There are sketches of local Maori, flora, fauna and landscapes. On 1st May the Foljambe family depart for England aboard the SS Corinthic. Further sketches of shipboard life and seascapes as the vessel passes through the Panama Canal, past Cuba and up the East Coast of America to Chesapeake Bay and Newport, Rhode Island. The last entry is for the beginning of June. Other - Page 30 of the diary was blank, so the donor did not supply the Library with an image of this page.
