Description: The palisades of a large Maori pa, with several Maori greeting Bellingshausen and his men. Dense bush in the background. There was no large pa at Ship Cove in 1820, nor did Ship Cove itself become a great whaling port, although Te Awaiti, at the entrance to Tory Channel, some distance away in Queen Charlotte Sound, did become a whaling station. Description: Half-length portrait of Hongi Hika, shown with full facial moko, in a flax cloak, holding a musket. Behind him is a sailing ship, probably in the Bay of Islands, where Hongi came from. Description: John Rutherford, the 'tattooed Englishman', standing inside a pa, dressed in a cloak, and displaying his tattooed chest and face. In front, a man is pounding fern root and behind a woman is seated outside a wharenui with carved frontage.
