Zoe Martin Carter was Beverly Shore-Bennett's Grandmother. She was the daughter of Robert Martin who ran a very successful interior decorating firm from ca 1863 from his shop in Manners Street Wellington. This business passed to Zoe and her husband Charles Carter and continued until 1923 when a fire destroyed the back of the shop leading to its closure.
As a young woman Zoe was a foundation pupil at the Wellington School of Design which opened in 1886. Its Director was A D Riley, a South Kensington Design school man, who was employed to establish a technical college in Wellington. The main purpose of the design department was to provide art training for teachers in the state school system. Under Riley the design school offered much more substantial courses than those required to skill teachers in basic drawing techniques. Student examinations were sent to South Kensington for assessment.
After design school, Zoe worked in with her father and in 1890 married Charles Edward Carter, one of her father's craftsmen who specialised in stained glass design. Charles suffered from poor health and died in 1908.
In later life Zoe was active in many organisations such as the Wellington Early Settlers Association, the Wellington Beautifying Society, and the English-Speaking Union. She died in 1947.
