Description

Postcard shows an illustration, and the first verse of a song written and composed by Ballard MacDonald & James W. Tate in 1908. The illustration is of a young couple in a garden, the woman tending roses, while the young man in a boater standers behind her with his hands in his pockets. She smiles back at him. There are two beehives at the right.

British-born songwriter and composer James William Tate (1875-1922) worked in America with American lyricist Ballard MacDonald (1882-1935) to compose catchy sentimental music hall songs. As they became popular the lyrics were issued on sets of images, as published postcards (in this case) or as magic lantern slides.

Exhibited in 'Posted love; love letters from the Turnbull Library and beyond', at the National Library Gallery, 9 April - 4 July 1999.
