Description

Steam ship Rimutaka coming in to Port Chalmers, and the fishing boat Psyche moored to a pier at Port Chalmers, photographed, probably by Catherine Euphemia Matheson who took over the David Alexander De Maus studio in 1932.

Twin screw, geared turbine steamer of 16576 tons. Built in 1923 for the P & O Steam Navigation Co., and launched as the Mongolia. In 1938, transferred to the New Zealand Shipping Co. and renamed Rimutaka. Sold early in 1950 to the Incres Steam Navigation Co. of Panama, and renamed Europa, running in the immigrant trade between Europe and America. See Ships with New Zealand Associations (Vol 3, p 107). The Psyche has the registration DN65Psyche.
