Cutting and extension of the East Coast railway line, between 1883-1900. Taken by an unidentified photographer.
A former train driver on the line has identified it as the cutting south of the present Makotuku Crossing Loop, & just north of the Matamau Viaduct. Probably taken during 1884 when that section of the Napier - Woodville line opened.
