Story of Stephen Lancaster, who arrived in Wellington on the `Indian Queen' in 1857, on a two year contract with the Provincial Government as foreman of road works. In 1859 he married Sarah Eagle and the couple settled in Karori and took up farming. They built a house on their land which they named Chesney Wold (Karori Road). From the time of his arrival in Karori Stephen was involved in public affairs, and in 1891 when the Karori Borough Council was established, he became the first mayor. Includes details of the Lancaster family in Lancashire and Yorkshire; the Eagle family; the children of Stephen and Sarah. Includes a bibliography.
