Description

The Wanganui River in the foreground, a plain beyond with clumps of trees and low hills, leading to Tongariro in the background. The artist has indicated the direction of the flow of the river, and has marked with a cross and arrow the location of the camp of the 1847 raiding party of Maori, possibly those associated with the death of three members of the Gilfillan family.
