Shows Bertha (Arbuthnot) Burnett in 1829, aged about 27, possibly just before the date of her marriage to Samuel Burnett. Painted in Edinburgh. She is dressed in green and is wearing a lace cap and collar
Typescript on verso gives provenance and information about Samuel and Bertha Burnett. Copy on 3/1/1/4 8 April 1987.
Samuel Burnett had a sawmill at Taita and supplied the timber for the first wharf in Wellington. He and his wife Bertha arrived in Wellington in 1840 aboard the "Bengal Merchant", both aged 28, according to the passenger list

Physical Description: Oil on board 276 x 227 mm in original gold frame.
Provenance: Painted in Edinburgh, 1829 and left in Scotland with relations when the Burnetts came to New Zealand in 1840. Circa 1910-1912, the late Mr George Deller of Carterton, when visiting Scotland, collected the portrait for the late Mrs Isabella Ritchie (nee Burnett) from her cousins in Glasgow and brought it to New Zealand. Mrs Ritchie was a daughter of Bertha Burnett. The picture passed to her granddaughter Lita McKnight (nee Ritchie) who bequeathed it to the Library in 1987
