William Bambridge, writing master at St John's College, Auckland, described this scene in his diary (page 38) in which Rev William Charles Cotton is teaching Maori to a group of middle aged and young women in the vestry. The word on the blackboard is `tamaiti' which Bambridge translates as `a son'
