A landscape with temples and other ancient ruins, cows grazing in a river, trees and hills beyond. Probably an imaginary location
May be a copy of a work by an earlier artist. Is reminiscent of the work of Claude Lorrain, but no exact source has been found
Inscriptions: On backing board in pencil, 'Painted by J G Gilfillan in 1860'
Probably painted by John Gordon Gilfillan who lived in New Zealand until 1847 as a young man, moving with his father (John Alexander Gilfillan) to Australia, then returned to New Zealand, drowning in Lake Rotorua in 1875.
