Description

Shows 'Savage Club' members dressed in cloaks and grass skirts, assembled on a beach with Chief Savage (Professor Thomas Hill Easterfield) making a speech. Macbeth may appear as the artist at left, with the Club treasurer (George Toogood) to the right of him. One member, possibly William Pember Reeves, is reading a book titled "The king of the fortunate islands" (William Pember Reeves wrote "The fortunate isles" in 1897). An orchestra is playing on the far right, including a conductor, a pianist, a double-bassist, violinists, piccolo-players, a bassoonist and a trumpeter. At the top right, a pipe-smoking man is taking a photograph of the event.

Other persons are not identified by name, but appear to be individual likenesses. Many have painted on tattoo markings on their faces and bodies

A korero was the club's fortnightly meeting, culminating in an annual invitation korero at the Town Hall, where speeches and musical items took place.
