Rear view of the carriage behind steam locomotive "D" 197, at Lower Hutt Railway Station. A set of railway signals is near the rear of the carriage, with the engine on the left. On the side of the carriage is a sign "Guard". Photographed by Albert Percy Godber in 1906. Inscriptions: Album page - bottom right - Lower Hutt. D 197. First rail motor train. 1906.
\"D\" 197 (2-4-0T type), was built by Neilson (Maker's No 2561/80), went into service in March 1881, and was written off in 1899 and sold. See \"Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971\" by W G Lloyd.
Inscription in Godber Album says \"First rail motor train. 1906\", though it is listed as a steam locomotive in Lloyd's register of steam locomotives.
