Description

View of steel casings and equipment on the wharf at Opua in the Bay of Islands. The materials are for the building of the new export wharf. To the right of the wharf is the Opua Store. Photograph taken circa 13 July 1955, by an unidentified photographer for the Free Lance.

`Preparations for re-opening Opua as an export port for Northlands Overseas produce. Work has started on building a new export wharf at Opua, Bay of Islands, to replace the old wharf which served Oversea refrigerated ships until 1940 when it was closed as a wartime safety measure. This view shows the old wharf with equipment on it for the new one. The steel casings will be sunk to a depth of 100 feet or more for the steel and concrete piles to be used in a concrete section of the wharf. Turpentine piles which have arrived from Australia for the wooden section of the wharf can be seen in position by the pile drawer at upper left. On the right is a well known Opua store set over the sea which at high tide rises to within about 2 feet of its floor.'
