View of the 21 coffins of the unidentified victims in the open mass grave at the Karori Cemetery, Wellington. The grave is lined with tree fern fronds and wreaths have been laid on the coffins and along each side of the grave. Two groups of people can be seen. That on the left are public mourners. That on the right are the official group with the Duke of Edinburgh.
The Tangiwai railway disaster occurred on Christmas eve, 1953, during the first visit to New Zealand of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The Duke departed from the official programme to attend the mass burial which took place on December 31 1953.
