It was initially managed by the New Zealand Broadcasting Service, and its governance changed several times before becoming a limited-liability company with a government-appointed board in 1988 and then a Crown Entity in 2004.
The Hong Kong tour in 1980 was the Orchestra's second overseas tour, its first performances in the Northern Hemisphere, and its most extensive tour at that time.
