These papers relate to Rev Percy Hall's period as a London Missionary Society missionary in the Cook Islands in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Includes an extensive collection of inward correspondence; a collection of printed material, much by the mission press in Rarotonga; samples of school work; and some early newspapers, serials, maps and photographs, covering his period in the Cook Islands.
Also includes writings in Cook Islands Maori written by students at the mission and also collected by Percy Hall and by his predecessor, John J K Hutchin. Much of this material has been transcribed by Bob O'Brien and the transcriptions are available on the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre website (http://www.nzetc.org)

Relationship complexity - A purchase from Bethune's Auction in June 1987 of Tereora School children's work illustrating legends and customs of Cook Island Maoris, gives some samples from the 1960s and 1970s. This is to be found at 88-22-42 in Drawings and Prints Section
Percy Hall, a trained teacher, was appointed headmaster of Tereora Boarding School in Rarotonga in Jul 1900. In 1905 he returned to England where he trained at the London Missionary School Hackney College in theology and was ordained in 1908. From Feb 1908 he worked in Rarotonga, being appointed to the training institution at Avarua in 1916, when he left Rarotonga for New Zealand and resigned from the London Missionary Society. In 1922, after teaching in Taihape, he taught at Marton District High School, retiring in 1940.
