Looking down on the Waitotara River with a hill to the left, a swampy flat area to the right. There are mounted British troops on the flat land in the foreground, two men fording the river and several more on the far bank. Military tents and a flag are on the highest peak on the left; a larger number of military tents with camp fires are on the flat land in the middle distance
