Lodge, Nevile Sidney 1918-1989:We are worried about our yachtsmen. Where is that vital spark that helped our forefathers brave the perils of the deep? Take the affair of the H.M.N.Z.S. Taranaki 'firing' on the yachts at New Plymouth last weekend - even if it wasn't as bad as they first made out - surely someone could have 'gone about' and rammed 'the enemy'. - just to demonstrate that the spirit of Drake is still with us." "Back to the clubhouse and splice the mainbrace Sir Walter." "Ay, ay, Sir Francis." 1961.

Description

In the two top scenes some yachts are hit by missiles launched from the HMNZS Taranaki and in the lower two scenes one of the yachts rams the Taranaki and then sails off with the sailors looking very pleased with themselves as the ship sinks beneath the waves. The text describes the the incident and laments the lack of spirit in modern sailors which did not allow them to ram the ship in the way depicted in the cartoon.
