1 volume(s), Illuminated manuscripts, Parchment, Vellum, 254 leaves, bound; 195 x 135mm., Single column, 17 lines, ruled in pale-red ink, written space 137 x 92mm, written in dark-brown ink in a flamboyant calligraphic lettre batarde, rubrics in red, capitals touched in yellow., Binding: Early 19th-century French calf gilt, silk endleaves, gilt edges. Bound by Etienne Gaudard., Decoration: 1-and 2-line and a few 3-line gold initials throughout, painted on alternating red, blue or green grounds. The larger initials are of rustic-branch design casting illusionistic shadows. Three historiated initials (3-line) brushed in gold on red or blue grounds appear on ff.34, 253v and 254. Line-fillers on most pages, in various designs; many are conventional red, blue and green bars overlaid with gold tracery; individualized motifs include: a dragon with a dog, two cocks confronting each other, a bird pecking at berries, or attacking a caterpillar. Some of these allude to the adjoining text: ff. 232v, 234, 236v, 239 and 245. The initials "E.S." and "E.C.", entwined in gold cordelieres, fill 2-line gaps in the text on ff.79v and 246v. All the pages are bounded by narrow rectangular bars of matt gold outlined with brown paint and black ink. Forty-six small miniatures (5- to 8-line) with simple gold and black indented frames occur on ff.37, 39, 41, 42, 43v, 44v, 65, 69, 71, 73, 76, 82v, 98v, 105v, 111, 124, 130, 159, 168, 171, 173v, 176v, 183v, 195v, 230, 232, 232v, 233, 233v, 234, 234v, 236v, 237, 237v, 238v, 239v, 240, 241v, 242, 243, 243v, 244v, 245v, 246v, 247 and 248v. Eight large miniatures (125 x 85mm) in oblong frames head 2 to 4 lines of text on ff.22, 46, 55, 91v, 115v, 141, 179 and 207v.They are painted in graduated tones of red, blues and greens, with contrasting black, white and charcoal grey. Folds of drapery are modelled lightly in gold hatching, while corn-yellow overlaid by filmy brushed gold highlights some compositions.Unframed free-hand drawings occupy the width of a column of text on four pages. On ff.45v, 115 and 207 they are bas-de-pages and displace several lines of text. Mid-page drawings also occur on ff.45v and 115 and a large illustration fills the space beneath the concluding lines of text on ff.254v.
