- Description
A horseman, accompanied by his dog, rides past a sign at the start of the Paringa section of the Haast Highway in Westland. The sign reads: `LEGAL STATE HIGHWAY ENDS AT THIS POINT. BUT THE ROAD MAY BE USED AT YOUR OWN RISK AS FAR AS LAKE PARINGA.' On the other side of the gravel road, another sign reads: `ROUGH CROSSING'. A shack and a parked car are in the background. Photograph taken in April 1960, by Mr D Nicholson for the National Publicity Studios.
