Description

A flyer for the showing of S. C. Brees' panoramic painting (or series of linked paintings) of New Zealand, shown at Leicester Square, London, 1849-1850. A red stamp along the side states 'Removed to the Linwood Gallery and admission reduced to one shilling at 1, 3, and 8 o'clock.' Mostly contains favourable comments from the press, about Brees' presentation and explanations in person as well as about the quality of his painting. Also advertises 'Guides, 6d, with engraving; ditto 2.6d with 10 engravings; ditto 11.6d with 54 engravings. A beautiful drawing-room book of New Zealand 1 pound 11s 6d. A large map of New Zealand, price 5s upwards.'

Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Brees lecturing in front of a large painting of Maori performing a haka. (B-031-034).

Brees showed his panorama of New Zealand (mostly of Wellington, Hutt Valley and South Wairarapa) at the Leicester Square, London, Panorama Theatre, 1849-1850, to promote emigration to New Zealand.
