Description

Two photographs taken by Malcolm Ross on the cruise of HMS Mildura to the Cook Islands, Niue and Tonga, October 1900, during which the Cook Islands and Niue were annexed on behalf of New Zealand.

The upper photograph (PA1-q-633-19-1) shows Captain Henry Baynes of HMS Mildura hoisting the Union Jack at the annexation of Mangaia, 10 October 1900.

The lower photograph (PA1-q-633-19-2) shows Lord Ranfurly (obscured) reading the proclamation at the annexation of Mangaia, 10 October 1900.
