Description

Head and shoulders of a Maori chief rolling his eyes with his tongue protruding.

An exaggerated version of the right side of an engraving from Cook's first voyage: The manner in which the New Zealand warriors defy their enemies, engraving from Parkinson, Sidney. A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas. (London, 1773) pl. 17. The man drawn by Parkinson in 1769 was not named. Florance may have obtained the name 'Tarra or George' from a portrait of Te Ara (d 1827) by artist Richard Read (1705?-ca 1843). The known image of Te Ara bears no resemblance to this portrait.
