Surveyor Julius von Haast's visual notes on his surroundings during climbs in the Nelson Lakes district. Valleys and mountain ranges with peaks and other features marked. Lake Rotoiti in the foreground, with "Wairaupaß" (Wairau Valley), "Wairau Range" (St Arnaud Range) and "Vorberg des Ben Nevis" (foothill of Ben Nevis) indicated. The Wairau Valley is in the centre background, and the view looks north.
