Description: A cabbage tree to the left, with a fern or juvenile tree fern sprouting at its foot, a small rocky stream, bush on the far side of the stream and a high peaked hill, possibly intended to be Mount Kaukau, lit by sunrise or sunset in the background. Gold was resident in Wellington from 1847 to 1857, but the exact location of his residence and hence of this view, is not known. He is most likely to have been in the Thorndon area, possibly Tinakori Road, in which case this may be the stream that ran along the gully at the end of Hobson Street (now the motorway); or he may have been near the Mt Cook barracks in Te Aro, and this shows a stream in the Aro Valley. However there is no hill of quite this shape around Wellington. Topographical accuracy was not Gold's strength. Before the backing was removed from this work and the title revealed the work was catalogued as showing Mount Taranaki. Gold appears to have added many titles some years later and he may have been mistaken in his titling of this watercolour. Inscriptions: Recto - At back of our house Wellington. Carry. [Carry was the artist's abbreviation for the name of his daughter Caroline, to whom this collection of sketches was passed] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 253x178mm Provenance: Family descent, to London dealer (1991) to Auckland dealer (1991)
