Description

Sketch of model Maori pā, Whakarewarewa, showing Puarenga Stream nearby. Some elements of the sketch are drawn in red ink, including a gateway labelled 'Proposed', and some are drawn in black ink, including a gateway labelled 'Present'.

Historian Don Stafford described Rotowhio as an early Ngati Tama village which was close to a small 'lake of blue ducks' within the Whakarewarewa Reserve (see 'The history and placenames of Rotorua', 'The new century in Rotorua: a history of events from 1900', and 'The founding years in Rotorua: a history of events to 1900 ' by Donald Murray Stafford).

Inscriptions: Verso - centre - Rotorua, Whakarewarewa Pa (Rotowhio)

The name Rotowhio for the model pā was taken from the name of an early pā or village known as Rotowhio which is said to have been sited at the Whakarewarewa.
