Description

"H" class locomotive, originally named "Mount Cook", photographed at Cross Creek in 1886. Two men are identified as J Hosie (on front of engine), and G Bartlett (in cab). Note on back of File Print reads: Photographers: Burton Bros. (see print 4708-1/2). This negative is a copy made by Albert Percy Godber.

Dated from Godber Index at TL 6/1/15 (held in Photographic Archives) in the 1/4 plate sequence (under L. Loco H. Cross Creek. 1886. J Hosie, & G Bartlett in cab)

In Godber's album he gives the locomotive number as being "H" 202, "Mount Cook", but in the "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" W G Lloyd gives "H" 200 as having the name "Mount Cook" (p 90. Locomotive names).

Included in the Godber Album, p 21, are blueprint specifications for the Fell type locomotives, Avonside Nos 200, 201, 202, and Neilson Nos 203 & 204.

Inscriptions: Album page - J Hosie, fireman. G Bartlett, driver. This engine was on the train which was blown off the rails at "Siberia". 11.9.1880. H 202, "Mount Cook"
